Tottenham Report Abhorrent Racist Abuse of Danso to Police Following Dramatic Draw with Brighton
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they have reported 'abhorrent' racist abuse directed at defender Radu Dragusin to police following Sunday's dramatic 1-1 draw with Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The incident occurred during a thrilling Premier League encounter that saw Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke score a controversial late equaliser after what appeared to be a handball in the build-up.
Watch the highlights:
The club released an official statement condemning the abuse, saying: 'We are disgusted and appalled by the racist abuse directed at Radu Dragusin following today's match. We have immediately reported this abhorrent behaviour to the police and are working with authorities to identify the individuals responsible. There is absolutely no place for racism in football or society.'
Dragusin, who joined Tottenham from Genoa in January, has been a regular starter under acting head coach Matt McClaren following the departure of Ange Postecoglou. The Romanian international was seen walking off the pitch visibly distressed after the final whistle, with teammates and staff offering support.
The match itself was marred by controversy, with Tottenham taking the lead through a well-worked goal from Manor Solomon in the first half. However, the visitors thought they had won it when van Hecke struck in the 89th minute, though replays showed the ball appeared to strike his arm before he controlled it and finished.
Tottenham manager Matt McClaren expressed his disappointment not only with the result but with the off-field incident: 'First and foremost, my thoughts are with Radu. What happened to him is completely unacceptable. The players and staff are fully supportive of him. Beyond that, we are also deeply frustrated with the VAR decision that denied us all three points.'
The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) also released a statement supporting Dragusin: 'We stand firmly with Radu and all players who continue to be targeted by racists. Football should be a safe space for everyone. We urge the authorities to take the strongest possible action.'
Brighton's equaliser sparked scenes of chaos, with Tottenham's players and coaching staff protesting furiously to referee Simon Hooper and fourth official Michael Salisbury. The point leaves Tottenham in 15th place, while Brighton move up to 10th in the Premier League table.
