Tottenham set to seek Pro Ref explanation over Bogle challenge on Tel
Tottenham are expected to complain to Pro Ref after Jayden Bogle avoided punishment for a challenge on Mathys Tel. The forward was forced off as Spurs lost 1-0 at Leeds.

Tottenham are expected to submit a formal complaint to refereeing body Pro Ref over Jayden Bogle's challenge on Mathys Tel during Saturday's defeat at Leeds United, BBC Sport reported. The club want an explanation for the decision not to dismiss the defender. The reported complaint is a planned step, rather than confirmation that a submission has already been made.

Watch the highlights:

Bogle caught Tel on the back of the ankle with his studs during the first half at Elland Road. Referee John Brooks did not show a card, and a lengthy video assistant referee review left that decision unchanged. Brooks was not asked to examine the incident at the pitchside monitor, according to the BBC's account of the review.

The BBC reported that VAR Tony Harrington cited the lack of speed in Bogle's movement and the fact he was stepping into the challenge when confirming no red card. Harrington described it as reckless, but the review did not produce a booking. Tottenham's position, as reported by the BBC, is that the incident should instead have resulted in Bogle being sent off.

Tel subsequently left the match with an ankle injury and was replaced by Dominic Solanke, Reuters reported. That forced Tottenham to change their forward line before the interval. The injury added to a difficult afternoon for the visitors, who went on to lose 1-0, while Leeds secured their first league victory since September.

Roberto De Zerbi nevertheless declined to attribute the defeat to the officials. Speaking to TNT Sports in comments carried by Reuters, the Tottenham manager expressed confidence in the referee and VAR while directing attention towards his team's performance. He said Spurs had opportunities to attack and defend better and criticised their second-half spirit, character and physicality in individual contests.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke defended Bogle's intentions while expressing concern for Tel, Reuters reported. Farke said the contact was not deliberate and wished the injured forward a quick recovery. His response addressed the defender's intent, while Tottenham's expected approach to Pro Ref concerns the disciplinary decision taken during the match.
