Tottenham held by Everton as goalless Premier League start reaches four games

Tottenham's wait for a first Premier League goal of the season continued with a 0-0 home draw against Everton, leaving them scoreless after four matches. According to the Guardian's match report, Spurs had never previously begun a league campaign with four games without scoring. Everton maintained their unbeaten start after creating several opportunities to take all three points.

The result followed Tottenham's goalless draw at Nottingham Forest, where they had failed to register a shot on target. This time, efforts from Mateus Fernandes and substitute Lucas Bergvall tested Jordan Pickford, but neither broke the deadlock. The home supporters booed at full time as another league match passed without a Tottenham goal.

Spurs began with quick passing and pressure, with Rodrigo Bentancur involved in midfield and Savio providing pace. Clear openings were scarce, however. Jan Paul van Hecke sent a half-volley over from a difficult angle after an Andy Robertson free-kick, while Fernandes stumbled in the penalty area after receiving a pass from Van Hecke. Everton's James Garner produced the game's first shot on target with a free-kick near half-time.

Fernandes tested Pickford from distance in the 47th minute, but Everton became more threatening after the interval. Tyrique George got past Archie Gray and crossed for Thierno Barry, whose header struck Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky before going off target. Gray was filling in at right-back for the injured Pedro Porro, while Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was also without injured left-back Destiny Udogie.

Kinsky then handed Everton another opening by passing directly to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall near his own penalty area. The goalkeeper recovered to block the resulting attempt. Former Tottenham winger Brennan Johnson also missed a chance, shooting over in the 75th minute after Dewsbury-Hall set him up. Those opportunities left David Moyes's side unable to turn their second-half pressure into a winning goal.

Tottenham had a late chance after Pickford's clearance went to substitute James Maddison. The ball reached Bergvall, but Pickford saved his low effort comfortably. The draw extended a difficult home league record for Spurs: the Guardian reported that they have won just once at home in the competition this calendar year, against Everton on the final day of last season.
