Tottenham fall bottom after 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur dropped to the bottom of the Premier League after second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa earned Newcastle United a 2-0 victory in north London. BBC Sport reported that the goals arrived within a 10-minute spell, giving Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle his first league win while Spurs remained without a point or goal after two matches.

Tottenham created 17 attempts and put six on target, but Newcastle converted both of their shots on target. The defeat followed Spurs’ 3-0 loss at Brentford in their opening league fixture, leaving Roberto de Zerbi’s team 20th in the table with five goals conceded across the two games. Thousands of home supporters left before the final whistle.

De Zerbi said he was disappointed by the result but insisted there was no panic. He argued that Tottenham had played better before conceding the opening goal and said the team needed to improve defensively, work hard and develop stronger connections between the players. The Italian has been in charge since late March, when he took over during Tottenham’s fight to avoid relegation.

The club entered the new season after two consecutive 17th-place finishes, surviving on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign. BBC Sport reported that Tottenham have now won only three of their past 23 home league matches, extending a difficult run at their stadium despite major investment in the squad.

Spurs spent more than £300 million during the summer. Their additions included Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and Manchester City winger Savio. Striker Omar Marmoush made his Tottenham debut against Newcastle after joining on loan from City, with the transfer due to become permanent next summer.

De Zerbi said before the match that Tottenham were still seeking another player in a specific position before Tuesday’s transfer deadline. Asked afterward about players linked with departures, he said anyone wishing to leave would need to bring an acceptable financial solution to the club. His immediate task is to turn extensive squad changes into results after Tottenham’s winless start.
