Tom Westley steps down as Essex captain after seven seasons

Tom Westley has stepped down as Essex captain following the county's final Championship match against Glamorgan, ending a spell in charge that began in January 2020. Essex confirmed the change on 28 September, with director of cricket Chris Silverwood saying a successor would be announced later.

In the club's announcement, Westley said he believed his most important contribution was to score runs and help Essex win, but felt he had not managed that this season. He took responsibility for a demanding campaign and expressed particular disappointment with results in its second half. The 37-year-old said the time had come for Essex to take a different direction.

The decision follows a decline in Essex's Championship placings. BBC Sport reported that the county finished in the top four in each of 2022, 2023 and 2024, before slipping to sixth in 2025 and eighth this year. Their final fixture of the 2026 season ended in a draw against Glamorgan, bringing Westley's seventh season as captain to a close.

Westley had inherited the leadership from Ryan ten Doeschate when Essex were reigning county champions. His first season delivered the Bob Willis Trophy, with Essex winning the final at Lord's. As BBC Sport noted, that shortened red-ball competition replaced the County Championship in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. His leadership responsibilities also extended to Essex's men's 50-over side.

The captaincy change is distinct from his playing contract. Essex announced in September 2025 that Westley had agreed a two-year extension running through the end of the 2027 season, with a testimonial year included. That announcement recorded a career with the county stretching from its academy in 2003 to more than 500 appearances across formats. He also played five Tests for England in 2017, making a half-century on debut against South Africa at The Oval.

Silverwood thanked Westley for his commitment and contribution to the club both as a leader and away from the field. Westley, Essex's longest-serving current player, also acknowledged the support of members, supporters, teammates, coaches and his family as he brought his captaincy to an end.
