Tom Westley steps down as Essex captain with Division One status unresolved

Tom Westley has stepped down as Essex captain, bringing an end to a tenure that began in January 2020 as the county waits to learn whether it will retain its place in Division One. Essex confirmed the leadership change after their final County Championship match against Glamorgan, with a successor to be announced later.

In the club’s announcement, Westley said he believed his most valuable contribution was through runs and helping Essex win, but felt he had fallen short of that aim this year. The 37-year-old accepted responsibility for a demanding season and expressed particular disappointment with results in its second half. He said the time had come for a change in leadership.

According to BBC Sport, Essex finished eighth in Division One, immediately above the relegation places. Their closing draw with Glamorgan left them 25 points ahead of Leicestershire, who are appealing a 27-point deduction for breaching pitch regulations. If Leicestershire’s appeal succeeds and all 27 points are restored, they would remain in the top flight and Essex would be relegated instead. Essex’s current position therefore does not yet guarantee survival.

Westley took over from Ryan ten Doeschate when Essex were reigning county champions. The County Championship was cancelled in 2020 because of the Covid pandemic, but he guided the team to the Bob Willis Trophy, the shortened red-ball competition held in its place. BBC Sport reported that Essex subsequently finished in the top four in each season from 2022 to 2024, before slipping to sixth in 2025.

The captaincy change also closes a chapter for the club’s longest-serving player. Essex said Westley joined their academy in 2003 and made his first-team debut in 2007. Alongside his red-ball leadership, he captained the men’s 50-over campaigns and, according to the club, became the leading run-scorer in One Day Cup history in 2025.

Director of cricket Chris Silverwood thanked Westley for his leadership and contribution both on and off the field. Westley also acknowledged the support of members, supporters, players, coaches and his family during his time in charge. Essex have not named his replacement, saying an announcement will follow in due course.
