Tom Lammonby's Unbeaten 74 Gives Somerset Control at Hove

Tom Lammonby made an unbeaten 74 to put Somerset in control against Sussex after the second day of their County Championship Division One match at Hove. The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report published by BBC Sport, said Somerset closed on 167-2 in their second innings, leading by 119 runs with eight wickets remaining.

Lammonby faced 143 balls in a chanceless innings that represented his highest score of the season. He and Josh Thomas shared an opening partnership of 92 after Somerset began their second innings 48 runs behind. Thomas was dismissed when Charlie Tear took a low slip catch off Sean Hunt after the bowler changed ends.

Archie Vaughan then added 49 with Lammonby before edging Jaydev Unadkat behind while driving. Henry Nicholls joined Lammonby and the pair negotiated the final 10 overs of the day, leaving Somerset well placed to extend their advantage when play resumes. The match situation followed Sussex's first-innings total of 250 in reply to Somerset's 202.

Sussex had appeared capable of building a larger lead when they reached 149-2, with Tom Clark scoring 85. His dismissal, caught at slip off Craig Overton, began a slide in which seven wickets fell for 61 runs across 29 overs. Overton finished with 4-66 and also removed Tear, Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe.

John Simpson and Unadkat restored some momentum for Sussex with a 40-run final-wicket stand. Simpson finished unbeaten on 64, his highest Championship score in eight innings, while Unadkat's only scoring strokes were two sixes. Jack Leach ended the partnership by dismissing Unadkat, giving Sussex a first-innings advantage of 48 and a batting bonus point.

Somerset took three points from the match by stumps and Sussex four, with both sides retaining an interest in the Division One title race. The report noted a poor weather forecast for day three, which could reduce the time available for either team to force a result. Lammonby will resume 26 runs short of a century as Somerset seek to turn their strong position into a decisive lead.
