Tom Lammonby's 74 Puts Somerset 119 Ahead of Sussex at Hove

Tom Lammonby's unbeaten 74 put Somerset in a strong position after the second day of their County Championship Division One match against Sussex at Hove. The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report published by BBC Sport, said Somerset closed on 167-2 in their second innings, leading by 119 runs with eight wickets remaining.

Sussex had earlier made 250 in reply to Somerset's first-innings 202, securing a lead of 48. Tom Clark led the home side with 85, but his dismissal began a slide in which Sussex lost seven wickets for 61 runs across 29 overs. Craig Overton took 4-66 for Somerset, including the wickets of Clark, Charlie Tear, Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe.

Sussex's last pair then added 40 to push the total to 250. John Simpson finished unbeaten on 64, his highest score in eight Championship innings, while Jaydev Unadkat hit two sixes. Jack Leach ended the partnership by dismissing Unadkat, who missed an attempted sweep.

Lammonby and Josh Thomas responded with a 92-run opening stand as batting conditions improved. Thomas was removed in the 23rd over when he edged Sean Hunt to Charlie Tear at slip. Archie Vaughan then added 49 with Lammonby before Unadkat had him caught behind off an inside edge while driving.

Lammonby reached stumps on 74 from 143 balls, his highest score of the season, after entering the match with a batting average of 28. Henry Nicholls accompanied him through the final 10 overs as Somerset lost no further wickets. The innings marked a substantial improvement for Lammonby after he had scored only one in Somerset's first innings.

The match remains significant to both counties' title ambitions, though the prospects of a decisive result are uncertain.
