Tom Curry signs two-year Sale Sharks extension through 2027-28

Tom Curry has signed a two-year contract extension with Sale Sharks, keeping the England flanker at the club until the end of the 2027-28 season. BBC Sport reported that the 28-year-old, who has spent his entire professional career at Sale, has agreed to continue with the team he first represented as an 18-year-old in October 2016.

Director of rugby Alex Sanderson said the length of the agreement reflected Curry’s desire to be confident he could meet the physical demands of the commitment. The pair intend to review his condition at the end of that period, with both wanting him to finish his career at Sale. That longer-term ambition remains separate from the two-year extension now agreed.

Sanderson described Curry as central to the squad and said the player had stressed the importance of retaining its core during their discussions. His identical twin brother, Ben, also plays for Sale. Curry said his lifelong support for the club, pride in its progress over the past decade and belief that the team still had more to achieve underpinned his decision to stay.

The contract follows a period in which Curry’s future in rugby had been uncertain because of a hip problem. According to BBC Sport, the 71-cap England international missed most of the 2023-24 season after being diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome. He underwent surgery in February 2024 and was warned that the condition could bring his playing career to an end.

Curry returned to top-level rugby four months after the operation. He subsequently underwent a stem-cell procedure in December 2024, with the aim of remaining able to play through the 2027 World Cup in Australia. Those earlier concerns explain why his physical condition formed part of the discussions about how far ahead he should commit to Sale.

Sanderson’s current assessment was positive: he said Curry had exceeded medical expectations and was showing no signs of deterioration at present. He acknowledged that the previous injury could become a consideration later, while describing Curry’s present mobility and freshness favourably. The extension secures his immediate club future without settling how long he will continue beyond the agreed term.
