Tom Christie signs Newcastle extension through 2028-29
Newcastle Red Bulls captain Tom Christie has signed a two-year contract extension. The agreement keeps the flanker at the club until at least the end of the 2028-29 season.

Newcastle Red Bulls captain Tom Christie has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until at least the end of the 2028-29 season. Newcastle announced the agreement on Wednesday, with head coach Dan McFarland identifying the flanker as a central part of the team he is building during a period of change.

Watch the highlights:

The 28-year-old New Zealander joined Newcastle from the Crusaders in August 2025, according to BBC Sport. He has since scored six tries in 24 appearances. The club said he played 19 times in his first season before taking over as captain for the current campaign, adding a formal leadership role to his responsibilities in the back row.

Christie's record before and alongside his move includes three Super Rugby titles and captaining Canterbury to the 2026 National Provincial Championship title, Newcastle said. The extension secures the services of an openside flanker whose experience includes both winning major competitions and leading a team to a domestic championship in New Zealand.

Explaining his decision in the club announcement, Christie described Newcastle as a place where he and his fiancée Sophie already felt settled. He credited the city and its supporters with making the move a positive experience, and said the team's ambitions had made him eager to extend his stay.

McFarland highlighted Christie's influence on his team-mates as well as his individual performances. The coach said his captain's professionalism and leadership were having a significant effect on other players, while praising the volume of work he gets through during matches and the effort he brings to that work.

The coach also pointed to Christie's defence and breakdown skills, while saying he was adding more to Newcastle's attack. McFarland described the player's energy and physicality as qualities that spread through the group, linking his contribution with the wider squad rather than just his own statistics.

For McFarland, retaining Christie also provides continuity as Newcastle develops. He said the club needed an established core to build around and viewed the captain as a long-term leader. The new agreement gives Newcastle that commitment through the end of the 2028-29 campaign.
