American Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti Rejects NFLPA Overture to Remain in College Sports
Tim Pernetti confirms his commitment to the American Conference after being considered for NFL Players Association executive director position won by JC Tretter.

Tim Pernetti has emphatically reaffirmed his commitment to college athletics and the American Athletic Conference, announcing his decision to remain as commissioner after being courted for the high-profile NFL Players Association executive director position that ultimately went to former Green Bay Packers center JC Tretter.

Pernetti's announcement came via a comprehensive statement that channeled the now-famous "I'm not leaving" declaration popularized by Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Wolf of Wall Street," joining a growing list of sports figures who have used the reference to confirm their loyalty to current positions.

The former Rutgers tight end's decision represents a significant vote of confidence in the American Conference's direction and future prospects. His statement emphasized deep-rooted belief in college athletics' fundamental mission and the transformative impact it creates for student-athletes across the nation.

"I believe in the mission of college athletics, the academic opportunities it offers and the life-changing experiences it creates for student-athletes," Pernetti declared. "I have deep respect for my colleagues across college sports, the American Conference and the people who work every day to strengthen it."

The commissioner specifically praised the conference presidents for their recent leadership on critical decisions that have strengthened the league's foundation. Key initiatives including discussions regarding grant of rights agreements, exit fees, and enhanced resources for the conference office have created the stability necessary for continued growth and innovation.

"Their leadership on key decisions, particularly in recent weeks, including discussions regarding the grant of rights, exit fees and the strengthening of resources for the conference office, will enable us to innovate at the pace this moment demands," Pernetti explained. "Those decisions create stability, reinforce the conference's direction and position the American to keep moving forward."

Pernetti's tenure as American Conference commissioner began on June 1, 2024, when he succeeded longtime leader Mike Aresco, who had overseen the former Big East's transition into the American Athletic Conference in 2013. Since taking control, Pernetti has guided the conference through a period of relative stability in an era defined by unprecedented realignment upheaval.

The commissioner's second football season yielded remarkable success, with Tulane becoming just the second American Conference team to qualify for the College Football Playoff in the expanded format's history. This achievement validated the conference's competitive strength and demonstrated its ability to compete with Power Five conferences on college football's biggest stage.

Pernetti's decision to remain with the American Conference provides crucial continuity for a league that has experienced significant turnover in recent years. His commitment, combined with the retention of all 14 football programs without structural realignment changes, positions the conference for unprecedented stability in 2026.

"I want to thank the NFLPA for its time and consideration during our discussions," Pernetti graciously acknowledged in his statement. "I also want our team at the American to know that I remain focused on the unfinished work ahead at the conference and fully committed to continuing the momentum we have built together."

The NFLPA ultimately selected JC Tretter, the former Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers center, for the executive director role on Tuesday. Tretter brings extensive player experience and union leadership credentials to a position that represents the interests of NFL players in collective bargaining negotiations and policy discussions.

Pernetti's decision reflects the growing stability and attractiveness of the American Conference as a destination for top-tier athletic and academic competition. The league's recent grant of rights discussions and exit fee negotiations have created the financial foundation necessary for long-term success.

The commissioner's background as a former Rutgers player provides authentic understanding of student-athlete experiences and challenges. This perspective has informed his approach to conference leadership and helped build trust with member institutions and their athletic departments.

As Pernetti prepares for his third football season at the helm, the American Conference enters 2026 with unprecedented stability and optimism. The retention of its commissioner and all member institutions creates the foundation for sustained growth and continued competitive excellence across all sports.
