Tiger Woods Released on Bail After Florida DUI Arrest Following High-Speed Rollover Crash
Tiger Woods was released on bail Friday evening after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a dramatic rollover crash near his Florida residence that adds another troubling chapter to his history of traffic incidents.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed that Woods was driving a Land Rover that overturned after attempting to overtake a truck on a narrow two-lane road shortly before 2:00 PM near the golf legend Jupiter Island home.
The vehicle clipped a trailer while Woods approached at what the sheriff described as a high rate of speed on a road with a 30 mph speed limit. The impact caused the Land Rover to veer off the roadway and come to rest on its driver side after sliding along the pavement.
Woods, who was alone in the vehicle, managed to exit through the passenger side door following the crash. Investigators observed signs of impairment and subjected the 15-time major champion to roadside sobriety tests before taking him into custody.
Crucially, authorities determined that alcohol was not a factor in the incident. A breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in Woods system, and investigators believed the impairment resulted from medication or drugs rather than alcohol consumption.
No illegal substances were discovered in the vehicle during the investigation. However, Woods refused to submit to a urinalysis test, leading to additional charges of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Sheriff Budensiek told reporters that no injuries were reported in the incident, though he emphasized the outcome could have been far more serious given the narrow roadway conditions where the crash occurred.
The arrest represents the latest in a concerning pattern of traffic-related incidents throughout Woods distinguished but turbulent career. His most serious previous crash occurred in February 2021 when his SUV veered off a coastal road in Los Angeles at high speed.
That 2021 accident resulted in multiple leg and ankle injuries so severe that doctors initially considered amputation. Woods has spent years recovering from those injuries while working to return to competitive golf at the highest level.
In 2017, Woods faced DUI charges after police in South Florida found him apparently impaired behind the wheel of a damaged vehicle. He later revealed he had taken a problematic mix of prescription medications and ultimately pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
Another incident occurred in 2009 when Woods crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and tree outside his Windermere, Florida home during the early morning hours. Police found him injured in the street while his then-wife Elin Nordegren told officers she had smashed the rear window with a golf club to help extract him.
President Donald Trump, who confirmed a relationship between Woods and his former daughter-in-law Vanessa Trump last year, expressed sympathy for his close friend following news of Friday arrest.
I feel so badly, Trump stated during a Miami media gathering. He has got some difficulty. There was an accident and that is all I know. He is a very close friend of mine, an amazing person, an amazing man.
The 50-year-old Woods has maintained a limited competitive schedule in recent years while managing multiple injuries and surgeries, including seven back procedures and a ruptured Achilles tendon that have significantly impacted his playing ability.
He has not competed in an official PGA Tour event since July 2024, though he made a recent appearance in the TGL indoor league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy, demonstrating his continued involvement in golf despite physical limitations.
Woods has entered this year US Senior Open but remains uncommitted to actually competing, while his availability for next month Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club remains uncertain given his legal troubles.
As an 82-time winner on the PGA Tour, Woods is tied with Sam Snead for the most victories in professional golf history. His last major championship came at the 2019 Masters, his fifth green jacket and 15th major title overall.
The arrest raises serious questions about Woods future both legally and professionally, as he continues navigating the challenges of maintaining his career while managing ongoing health issues and now renewed legal complications.
