Tiger Woods Released on Bail Following DUI Arrest After Florida Rollover Crash
Tiger Woods was released on bail Friday evening following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence after a dramatic rollover crash near his Jupiter Island residence that marked another troubling chapter in the golf legend's ongoing struggles with traffic incidents.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek detailed the sequence of events that led to Woods' arrest, explaining that the 50-year-old golf star was driving his Land Rover at what officials described as "a high rate of speed" when he attempted to overtake a truck on a narrow two-lane road with a 30mph speed limit.
The incident unfolded shortly before 2pm when Woods' vehicle clipped a trailer being towed by the truck, causing his SUV to veer off the roadway and roll onto its driver's side. Woods, who was alone in the vehicle, managed to exit through the passenger door following the crash.
Investigators who responded to the scene observed that Woods displayed clear signs of impairment, prompting roadside sobriety tests before his arrest. However, a breath test administered at the location showed no alcohol in his system, leading authorities to believe the impairment resulted from medication or drugs rather than alcohol consumption.
No illegal substances were discovered in Woods' vehicle during the investigation. The situation became more complicated when Woods refused to submit to a urinalysis test, resulting in additional charges beyond the initial DUI allegation. He now faces charges of DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Sheriff Budensiek emphasized how much worse the outcome could have been given the circumstances. "The truck had been slowing to turn into a driveway when Woods approached," he explained, noting that the narrow roadway could have resulted in a head-on collision if another vehicle had been traveling in the opposite direction.
President Donald Trump, who has maintained a friendship with Woods, expressed concern upon hearing news of the arrest during a media gathering in Miami. "I feel so badly," Trump stated. "He's got some difficulty. There was an accident and that's all I know. He's a very close friend of mine... an amazing person, an amazing man."
The connection between Trump and Woods has drawn additional attention since Woods confirmed his relationship with Trump's former daughter-in-law, Vanessa Trump, last year. This personal relationship has added another dimension to the public interest surrounding the incident.
This crash represents the latest in a series of traffic-related incidents that have plagued Woods throughout his career. In February 2021, he suffered severe injuries when his SUV veered off a coastal road in Los Angeles at high speed, resulting in multiple leg and ankle injuries so serious that doctors considered amputation.
Woods also faced DUI charges in 2017 after police in South Florida found him asleep behind the wheel of a damaged vehicle. He later acknowledged taking a problematic combination of prescription medications and pleaded guilty to reckless driving in that case.
A third incident occurred in 2009 when Woods crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and tree outside his Windermere, Florida home in the early morning hours. His then-wife Elin Nordegren told officers she had smashed the rear window with a golf club to help extract him from the vehicle.
The 82-time PGA Tour winner has maintained a limited playing schedule in recent years while managing multiple injuries and surgeries, including seven back procedures and a ruptured Achilles tendon. His last official PGA Tour competition came in July 2024, though he appeared earlier this week in the TGL indoor league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy.
Woods has entered this year's US Senior Open but has not committed to playing, while his participation in next month's Masters Tournament at Augusta National remains uncertain. The timing of this incident adds another complication to his already challenging return to competitive golf.
Tied with Sam Snead for the most PGA Tour victories in history, Woods last captured a major championship at the 2019 Masters, his fifth title at Augusta. His ability to compete at the highest level now faces additional uncertainty as he navigates these latest legal challenges alongside his ongoing physical limitations.
