Tiger Eyes Masters Return After Competitive Comeback in TGL Final
The 15-time major champion made his first competitive appearance in over a year but says Augusta National participation depends on his body's recovery.

Tiger Woods stepped back onto the competitive stage Tuesday night for the first time in more than a year, playing his final hole in the TGL season finale while cautiously optimizing about a potential return to Augusta National next month.

The 50-year-old golf legend replaced Kevin Kisner for Jupiter Links GC's decisive match against Los Angeles Golf Club in the best-of-three TGL championship final. Despite the team's 9-2 defeat, Woods demonstrated encouraging physical signs that fuel speculation about his Masters participation.

Driving the ball more than 300 yards on multiple occasions, Woods appeared in solid physical condition following his October surgery to replace a disc in his back. The procedure marked his latest battle with injuries that have significantly limited his competitive appearances in recent years.

"I've been trying, this body doesn't recover like it did when I was 24, 25," Woods admitted candidly following the match. "It doesn't mean I'm not trying; I've been trying for a while. I've had a couple of bad injuries last year that I've had to fight through and has taken some time."

The Masters, scheduled to begin April 9 at Augusta National, holds special significance for Woods, who has captured the green jacket five times throughout his storied career. His relationship with the tournament dates back to his amateur days, creating an emotional connection that transcends pure competition.

"I've loved the Masters tournament, I've loved being there since I was 19 years old, so it's meant a lot to me and my family over the years and I'm going to be there either way," Woods stated, suggesting he will attend regardless of his playing status.

Tuesday's TGL appearance marked Woods' second competitive round since his back surgery, with his previous action coming in February 2025, also in the indoor league he co-founded. The technology-driven format, featuring a massive screen in a purpose-built Florida venue, provides a controlled environment for Woods to test his physical capabilities.

Jupiter Links entered the final match with momentum after defeating Rory McIlroy's Boston Common in the previous week's semifinal. However, they faced a formidable Los Angeles squad featuring England's Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, who had claimed the opening match of the finals.

Woods' team initially responded positively, building a 2-0 advantage early in the decisive match. The momentum shifted dramatically when Woods missed a critical three-foot putt on the seventh hole, providing Los Angeles with the spark they needed to mount their comeback.

"I missed a short one to kind of get it started and give them momentum and we never got it back," Woods reflected on the turning point that ultimately decided the championship.

Los Angeles capitalized ruthlessly, producing three consecutive eagles that left Jupiter Links with no response. The avalanche of scoring forced Jupiter to concede both the match and tournament on the 10th hole, ending Woods' comeback in disappointing fashion.

Despite the competitive disappointment, Woods expressed satisfaction with his physical condition throughout the match. "It was fine physically," he confirmed, addressing the primary concern surrounding his return to competition.

The TGL experience provides valuable data for Woods and his team as they evaluate his readiness for traditional golf tournaments. The indoor format eliminates weather variables and reduces physical demands compared to walking 18 holes on championship courses.

Woods' Masters participation would mark a significant milestone in his ongoing recovery process. The tournament's prestige and his historical success there create natural motivation, but his pragmatic approach suggests he won't rush back unless confident in his physical capabilities.

Jupiter Links GC, also featuring Max Homa and Tom Kim, benefited from Woods' guidance throughout the TGL season despite his limited playing role. His leadership and strategic input contributed to their playoff success, even though the ultimate prize eluded them.

The golf world will monitor Woods closely over the coming weeks as the Masters approaches. His TGL performance offered encouraging signs while highlighting areas requiring continued improvement as he weighs his Augusta National return.
