Thomas Rew extends Somerset contract through 2029 after England call-up
Thomas Rew has signed a new Somerset contract running until the end of the 2029 season, extending his commitment to the county following a series of England selections. BBC Sport reported that the 18-year-old wicketkeeper-batter's previous agreement covered the 2028 campaign, meaning the new deal adds another season at the club where he developed.
Watch the highlights:
The extension follows Rew's first senior England call-up and his appointment last week as England Lions captain for forthcoming T20 matches against West Indies A. He is thought to be the Lions' youngest captain, according to the BBC report. Rew has also received an England developmental deal and is included in the squad for the T20 series in Australia next month.
Since making his Somerset debut in 2025, Rew has appeared in 30 matches across the three formats and scored 990 runs. His first two County Championship centuries came this season. Those contributions have accompanied his progression from the county's youth system: he has been involved with Somerset since the under-11 age group and now plays at the club alongside his older brother, James.
Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry praised the speed with which Rew has settled into the first-team environment. In comments reported by BBC Sport's Sophie Hurcom, Hurry highlighted the teenager's confidence, willingness to improve and ability to respond to challenges. He said the county sees Rew as a player capable of contributing across all formats over the coming years, while emphasising the qualities that can help him continue developing.
Rew's England progress also follows notable achievements at youth level. In June 2025, he recorded the fastest century by an England Under-19 player. Earlier this year, he captained England to the Under-19 World Cup final. He will turn 19 next month, with the Lions captaincy and senior T20 selection adding further international opportunities to his county commitments.
Rew described representing Somerset as a source of pride and stressed his connection to the club and its supporters. He said the county had been his home while growing up and expressed a desire to help the team keep competing for trophies. The renewed agreement keeps that relationship in place through the end of 2029.
