Terland rescues derby draw as Manchester City surrender WSL top spot
Elisabeth Terland's late equaliser earned Manchester United a 1-1 derby draw and ended Manchester City's perfect league start. Chelsea moved above the defending champions on goal difference.

Elisabeth Terland scored late to secure a 1-1 draw for Manchester United against Manchester City on Sunday, ending the defending champions' winning start to the Women's Super League season. According to The Guardian's match report, the equaliser denied City a seventh victory in seven league games and left them second behind Chelsea on goal difference.

Watch the highlights:

Khadija Shaw had put City ahead in the second half, but United recovered after losing both of last season's league derbies 3-0. The decisive response came following a short free-kick: Maya Le Tissier sent a high ball into the penalty area, Shaw headed it away, and Terland struck the loose ball first time into the bottom corner.

City had threatened before the interval through Aoba Fujino and Lauren Hemp. Fujino shot narrowly wide after a flick from Yui Hasegawa, while Hemp sent an effort onto the roof of the net. United also created openings, with Terland unable to make clean contact with Andrea Medina's cutback. City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita saved attempts from Ella Toone and Jess Park as the hosts sought an opening goal.

The chances continued after the break. Yamashita denied Terland in a one-on-one, and Park struck the top of the crossbar around the hour. Shaw tested United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce at her near post before finding the breakthrough with a low shot. The City forward then came close to extending the lead, sending another effort over the bar from close range.

United missed an opportunity to draw level when Julia Zigiotti shot over from inside the area with fewer than 15 minutes remaining. City still had chances to make the result secure: Shaw headed wide from a corner and Fujino had a long-range effort parried. Those openings went unconverted, leaving United within reach until Terland finally found the equaliser.

The result gave United manager Eva Olid a point against the reigning champions after her tenure had begun with defeats by London City and Chelsea. For Andrée Jeglertz's City, attention now turns to a demanding sequence of fixtures. The Guardian reported that they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League during the week before travelling to third-placed London City next Sunday.
