Tennessee Volunteers Add Dolly Parton Helmet Tribute for 2026 Season

The Tennessee Volunteers will honor Dolly Parton with a commemorative sticker on their football helmets during the 2026 college football season. The Guardian reported that head coach Josh Heupel announced the tribute on Monday, following the Tennessee native’s death from cancer last week at the age of 80.

Heupel described Parton’s influence in East Tennessee and beyond while explaining the team’s decision. He said the program wanted to recognize both her accomplishments and what she meant to people across the region and the country. The sticker will be displayed on the back of Tennessee’s helmets throughout the season.

The design uses the Volunteers’ signature orange and features a butterfly resembling the one associated with Dollywood, Parton’s theme park. Her first name appears at the center of the logo. The tribute connects the university’s football identity with one of the region’s most widely recognized cultural figures.

Parton grew up in Sevierville, about 30 miles east of the University of Tennessee’s Knoxville campus, as one of 12 children. She frequently discussed her family’s poverty and later supported initiatives in her home region. Her nonprofit Imagination Library provides free books to children, an example of the charitable work Heupel referenced when discussing her impact.

Her relationship with the university also extended to public appearances. Parton performed on Tennessee’s campus twice during world tours. In 2023, former Tennessee and NFL quarterback Peyton Manning accompanied her to a stage at Neyland Stadium before a football game, where she led the crowd in a rendition of Rocky Top.

The helmet tribute will make its on-field debut as Tennessee begins its season. The Volunteers are scheduled to host Furman on Saturday in their opening game. The sticker gives the program a season-long way to recognize Parton’s East Tennessee roots, her connection to the university and her record of supporting people in the community where she was raised.
