Tennessee Star Ament Records First Scoreless Game While Playing Through Ankle Injury in March Madness Victory
Freshman forward Nate Ament went scoreless for the first time this season as Tennessee defeated Miami Ohio 78-56, with coach Rick Barnes confirming the player won't be 100% healthy until season ends.

Tennessee freshman star Nate Ament endured his first scoreless performance of the season during the Volunteers commanding 78-56 NCAA Tournament victory over Miami Ohio, as the 6-foot-10 forward continues battling through a persistent ankle injury that has plagued him for nearly a month.

The sixth-seeded Volunteers demonstrated their championship depth by overwhelming the 11th-seeded RedHawks at Philadelphia Xfinity Mobile Arena without significant offensive contributions from their highly touted freshman, who finished 0-of-3 from the field with three rebounds, three turnovers, one assist and one block in limited action.

Ament ankle problems originated during Tennessee February 24 contest at Missouri, when he suffered a right ankle sprain that forced him to miss the final two regular season games and significantly hampered his effectiveness during the SEC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Vanderbilt.

The injury impact was evident throughout Friday contest, as Ament struggled with his mobility and shot selection during the opening half before eventually retreating to the tunnel during the second half for what he described as movement therapy.

I went back to the tunnel to get movement so I could come back into the game, Ament explained following the victory. By the time he returned to the bench, Tennessee had established a commanding 20-point advantage that rendered his offensive contributions unnecessary.

Veteran head coach Rick Barnes provided candid assessment of his freshman star physical condition, acknowledging that complete recovery remains unlikely during the tournament run. He not going to be 100% healthy until the season is over because he had that ankle sprain where he had it, Barnes stated. He tries. I was watching him in practice just doing some basic stuff and he never says a word, but I could see on his face he was wincing a little bit.

Despite the obvious discomfort, Ament dismissed concerns about his availability for upcoming contests, particularly Tuesday second-round matchup against third-seeded Virginia. I am not really concerned with it, the freshman declared. I know that regardless, I am going to play. There no chance I would sit out a March Madness game. It about what can we do to get back to 100%, or as close to it as we can.

Tennessee supporting cast stepped up magnificently to compensate for Ament offensive struggles. J.P. Estrella delivered a dominant 14-point, 10-rebound double-double performance, while Felix Okpara contributed 12 points and five rebounds. The bench production proved equally crucial, with Amari Evans and Ethan Burg combining for 13 points in reserve roles.

The team depth provided Ament with perspective about his individual performance and the collective strength that could carry Tennessee through March Madness. I know that with every single position we got on this team, there another person ready on the bench to come in and pick up where the other man left off, he reflected. It puts less pressure on me.

While acknowledging his subpar offensive showing, Ament emphasized his defensive focus and overall contribution to team success. I think I was, for the most part, locked in defensively except for a few possessions. Overall it was not a really good game for me by any means.

The victory advances Tennessee to face Virginia, a matchup that will test both the team resilience and Ament ability to perform effectively while managing his physical limitations. Barnes indicated that rest and careful management remain priorities as they prepare for increasingly challenging opposition.

Right now he needs as much rest as he can, but he will do everything he can to be ready, Barnes concluded, highlighting the delicate balance between player health and championship aspirations that defines March Madness competition.
