Team USA Advances to World Baseball Classic Final Despite Controversial Strike Call Against Dominican Republic
The United States defeated Dominican Republic 2-1 in a thrilling World Baseball Classic semifinal marred by a disputed final strike call, with Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony providing the offensive spark through solo home runs.

The United States advanced to their third consecutive World Baseball Classic championship game Sunday following a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Dominican Republic in a semifinal that concluded with one of the tournaments most controversial calls, overshadowing what had been an enthralling contest between two star-studded lineups.

Gunnar Henderson and Roman Anthony provided the offensive fireworks with solo home runs, while the American pitching staff successfully neutralized what many considered the most explosive lineup in the tournament. The victory sets up a final matchup with either Italy or Venezuela for the championship.

The contest remained tightly contested throughout, with both teams showcasing spectacular defensive plays that highlighted the elite talent level. Aaron Judge demonstrated his cannon arm in the third inning, firing a 95.7 mph laser from right field to nail Fernando Tatis Jr. at third base. The Dominican Republic answered back with their own defensive brilliance when Julio Rodriguez scaled the center-field wall to rob Judge of a potential home run in the fifth inning.

National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes started for Team USA and delivered a solid performance through 4.1 innings, surrendering just one run on six hits before turning the game over to a bullpen that held the Dominican Republic scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

Junior Caminero put the Dominicans on the board first with a second-inning solo blast off Skenes, marking the teams tournament-record 15th home run and surpassing Mexicos 2009 mark. Henderson responded in the fourth with a clutch homer off Luis Severino to level the score, before Anthony delivered the decisive blow with his go-ahead shot against Gregory Soto.

The Dominican Republic, appearing in their first semifinal since capturing the 2013 championship, refused to go quietly into the night. In the ninth inning, with closer Mason Miller on the mound, Rodriguez drew a walk and advanced to third base, bringing the tying run just 90 feet away from home plate.

With two outs and the dangerous Tatis Jr. stepping into the batters box, Miller struck out Geraldo Perdomo on what should have been a routine save. However, the final pitch on a full count appeared to cross the plate several inches below the strike zone, according to television replays and immediate social media analysis.

The controversial call sparked immediate outrage from baseball experts and fans alike. ESPN Jeff Passan described it as the worst most consequential call of the WBC so far on social media. The absence of the Automated Ball-Strike challenge system in the tournament meant the Dominican Republic had no recourse to review the questionable decision.

While both teams benefited from missed calls throughout the contest, the timing and significance of the final strike made it particularly painful for the Dominican Republic. Their roster featured six players who finished among the top 10 in MVP voting last year and had dominated their path to the semifinals with an electric offensive attack.

The loaded American roster, led by stars like Bryce Harper and Judge, reached their third straight WBC title game after winning the inaugural tournament in 2017 and falling to Shohei Ohtani and Japan in 2023. The Americans now have the opportunity to capture their second World Baseball Classic championship.

For the Dominican Republic, missing out on the championship game represents a devastating blow given the talent assembled on their roster and their cruise through the early tournament rounds. The controversial ending will undoubtedly fuel debate about the need for expanded replay systems in future international competitions.

Despite the unfortunate conclusion, the semifinal showcased the compelling drama and elite talent that has made the World Baseball Classic appointment television for baseball fans worldwide. The Americans excellent pitching performance, rather than the disputed umpiring, ultimately determined the outcome.

Team USA will now prepare for Tuesdays championship game against either Italy or Venezuela, seeking to add another chapter to their growing legacy in international baseball competition.
