Szoboszlai's 99th-minute penalty earns Liverpool draw at Newcastle

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a 99th-minute penalty to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Sunday. BBC Sport reported that Liverpool trailed twice before rescuing a point in Andoni Iraola's first Premier League match as the club's head coach.

Cody Gakpo was among Liverpool's scorers, while Joe Willock put Newcastle 2-1 ahead after the interval. Liverpool substitute Victor Munoz won the late penalty after coming on in the 63rd minute, and Szoboszlai converted it to prevent the visitors from losing their opening league fixture.

Liverpool had also produced a dramatic late winner at Newcastle in August 2025, but the BBC described the mood after this draw as relief rather than celebration. A defeat would have been Liverpool's first on the opening weekend of a league season since the 2012-13 campaign. Instead, Iraola's side left Tyneside with a point after responding each time Newcastle moved in front.

Iraola told BBC Radio 5 Live that Liverpool did not deserve to lose and said the team had never given up. He also said he liked the energy shown by the players introduced from the bench and felt Liverpool finished the game strongly, while acknowledging that the goals conceded were among the areas requiring improvement.

Munoz made his Liverpool debut from the bench and supplied the decisive intervention by drawing the late foul. Alexis Mac Allister was introduced at the same time, shortly after Willock's goal. Florian Wirtz started but was replaced just after the hour, while former Newcastle striker Alexander Isak played on his return to St James' Park.

The BBC reported that Liverpool were caught on counterattacks for both Newcastle goals. It also noted that the club have now conceded nine goals from fast breaks in all competitions since the start of last season, more than any other Premier League team over that period. The draw provided an immediate display of resilience under Iraola, but also left the new coach with defensive issues to address after the opening weekend.
