Sydney Marathon Medals Carry Munich Stadium Engraving After Design Error
Finishers at the 2026 Sydney Marathon will receive medals bearing an image of the wrong stadium after organizers confirmed a design error ahead of the August 30 race. BBC News reported that the medal shows Munich's Allianz Arena rather than Sydney's Allianz Stadium, despite the event taking place thousands of miles away in Australia.

Questions about the engraving emerged after the official Sydney Marathon social media account revealed the medal earlier in the week. Users noticed that the stadium depicted on one side resembled the German venue, whose exterior is formed by thousands of diamond-shaped inflatable cushions. Sydney's stadium has a flatter facade marked by long bronze fins.
A Sydney Marathon spokesperson acknowledged to the BBC that an incorrect stadium had found its way onto the finisher medal and described the mistake as unfortunate. Organizers said they would not try to avoid the issue, but confirmed there would be no replacement before race day. Participants will therefore receive the medal with the Munich venue still engraved on it.
The design also features recognizable Sydney landmarks, including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Both sit along the marathon's 42.2-kilometre course. Organizers said the mistake had made the medal more unusual and noted that much of the response over the weekend had been good-humored rather than hostile.
Munich's Allianz Arena joined the reaction on Instagram, expressing surprise and joking about architectural connections between the two cities. The reverse of the medal carries a gold-and-indigo pattern by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian. Killian told the BBC he had no role in designing the opposite face containing the incorrect stadium engraving.
The error comes before a major edition of the race, with organizers expecting 40,000 runners after receiving more than 120,000 ballot entries. They have also highlighted record participation and fundraising for this year's event. Although the production mistake cannot now be corrected for finishers, the marathon is proceeding as scheduled, with the medal set to become an unintended record of the mix-up.
