Sydney Marathon Medal Mistakenly Features Munich's Allianz Arena
Organisers of the 2026 TCS Sydney Marathon have acknowledged that the finisher medal for this year's race mistakenly features Munich's Allianz Arena instead of Sydney's Allianz Stadium. BBC Sport, The Guardian and AFP, as carried by SBS News, reported the error after the medal design was unveiled on the event's official social media channels.
Watch the highlights:
The medal was intended to trace prominent sights along the Sydney course. Its skyline includes the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, but the stadium image has the distinctive diamond-patterned exterior associated with Allianz Arena in Germany. Sydney's Allianz Stadium, which the marathon route passes, has a markedly different, flatter profile.
A Sydney Marathon spokesperson confirmed that an incorrect stadium depiction had found its way onto the medal. The organisers characterised the mistake as an unfortunate error and said the reaction over the weekend had largely been good-humoured. The acknowledgement removed the earlier uncertainty over whether the engraved structure was simply a stylised version of the Sydney venue.
The stadium mix-up appears on the landmarks side of the two-sided medal. The reverse carries an indigo-and-gold design by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian. According to The Guardian's report, that artwork represents the kilometres of the course and the eight global major marathons, preserving a separate element of the medal's intended symbolism.
The 2026 race is scheduled for August 30, placing the disclosure one week before runners take to the course. Reports from BBC Sport and The Guardian indicated that finishers will receive the medal with the Munich stadium engraving, meaning the acknowledged mistake will remain part of this year's race keepsake.
The confusion stems from two venues that share the Allianz name but sit on different continents and serve different sporting settings. Munich's arena is the home ground of Bayern Munich, while the Sydney stadium is one of the landmarks on the marathon route. For organisers, the factual correction came before race day; for finishers, the design error will make the 2026 medal unusually identifiable.
