Swiatek Sails Past Snigur in Dominant Clay-Court Display
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has wasted no time in asserting her dominance on clay this season, delivering a clinical performance to dismantle Daria Snigur in straight sets at the opening clay-court tournament of the European swing.
The Polish superstar, who finished runner-up at last year's French Open, showed no signs of rust despite the transition from hard courts, dismantling her Ukrainian opponent with a ruthless efficiency that has become her trademark on the red dirt. Swiatek's heavy topspin forehand proved too powerful for Snigur to handle, as she broke serve three times across the two sets to secure a 6-2, 6-1 victory in just 58 minutes.
Speaking after the match, Swiatek emphasized the importance of building momentum early in the clay-court season. "Every match on clay feels different from hard courts. The ball bounces higher, slides more, and you need to adjust your footwork accordingly. I'm pleased with how my game translated today, but there's always room for improvement," she said.
Snigur, who upset a higher-ranked opponent earlier in the draw to reach the main draw, struggled to find any rhythm against Swiatek's relentless baseline assault. The Ukrainian qualifier managed just five winners in the entire match while committing 23 unforced errors, a stark contrast to Swiatek's disciplined 12 winners and modest six errors.
The victory marks Swiatek's second win of the clay-court campaign following a successful pre-season training block in Florida. Her serve, often criticized as a weakness in her otherwise complete game, looked sharper than ever, winning 78% of first-serve points.
Swiatek will face either former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza or rising Italian talent Martina Trevisan in the quarter-finals, should those matches go to form. However, the Polish star remained cautious about looking too far ahead. "I take it one match at a time. Every opponent on clay can be dangerous, and I need to maintain focus," she added.
With the French Open just six weeks away, Swiatek's early dominance suggests she will once again be the player to beat when tennis's elite descend on Roland Garros for the season's second Grand Slam.
