Swansea Sign Sunderland Defender Jensen Seelt on Season-Long Loan

Swansea City have signed Sunderland centre-back Jensen Seelt on loan for the rest of the season, strengthening a defensive group affected by injury. BBC Sport reported that the 23-year-old Dutch defender will join Vitor Matos's squad and is in contention to feature away to Derby County on Saturday.

Seelt has made 21 appearances for Sunderland since moving to the club from PSV Eindhoven in 2023. He came through PSV's academy before heading to England. His time with Sunderland has included a serious knee injury, and he featured only once during the club's 2024-25 promotion campaign.

The defender made two Premier League appearances early last season before joining Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on loan for the first half of the campaign. BBC Sport reported that Seelt experienced further knee trouble in Germany. His most recent competitive appearance came in December 2025, although he has since taken part in Sunderland's pre-season matches.

His arrival gives Swansea another central defensive option at a time when Cameron Burgess faces a long absence. Burgess, who played every minute of Swansea's 2025-26 Championship season, suffered an Achilles injury that is expected to keep him out until next season. Seelt joins captain Ben Cabango, Stephen Welsh and Filip Lissah among the available centre-backs.

Swansea have received more encouraging news about Cabango, whose heel injury is not considered serious. He left last weekend's draw with Sheffield United but could still be involved at Derby. Lissah can provide cover centrally, though Matos primarily views him as a right-back option alongside Josh Key. BBC Sport said Swansea could pursue another centre-back before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

Matos said Seelt would add valuable depth to Swansea's defensive choices. The head coach identified the new arrival's physical presence, aerial strength, composure in possession and reading of the game as useful qualities. Swansea could also include another newcomer, Stephen Eustaquio, at Pride Park following his permanent transfer from Porto.
