Swansea Sign Canada Midfielder Stephen Eustaquio From Porto

Swansea City have signed Canada midfielder Stephen Eustaquio from Porto in a £3.4 million move, giving the 29-year-old his first opportunity in the English Championship. BBC Sport reported that the transfer came as a surprise to Eustaquio, who had expected his next move might take him to Italy or Spain.

Eustaquio said Swansea's approach became attractive after he learned more about head coach Vitor Matos and the club's playing plans. Matos is Portuguese and favors a possession-based style, which the midfielder believes suits his game. Eustaquio also identified reaching the Championship play-offs as an ambition, while stopping short of making any guarantee about Swansea's season.

The move ends a four-and-a-half-year spell at Porto. Eustaquio made 157 appearances for the club, scoring 11 goals and supplying 12 assists. He helped Porto win two Portuguese league titles and other domestic trophies, and also featured in the Champions League, Europa League and Club World Cup after joining in 2022.

Born in Canada to Portuguese parents, Eustaquio moved to Portugal as a child. His club career included spells with Torrense, Leixoes and Chaves before a move to Mexican side Cruz Azul. He later returned to Portugal with Pacos de Ferreira, where his performances earned him the transfer to Porto. Earlier this year, he joined Los Angeles FC on loan to secure playing time before the World Cup.

Eustaquio arrives in Wales after helping Canada record its best World Cup performance. The national team's vice-captain often led the side during the tournament because captain Alphonso Davies had fitness problems. Canada reached the round of 16, with Eustaquio scoring a late winner against South Africa in the first knockout round. He described that goal as the high point of his career as an individual, according to the BBC report.

Swansea view Eustaquio as a replacement for Ethan Galbraith. His Championship introduction is due to come away at Derby County on Saturday, followed by a home match against Watford on Tuesday and a visit from Wrexham the next weekend. The schedule gives the experienced midfielder three games in seven days at the start of his new chapter.
