Sussex sign Keith Dudgeon on two-year deal after Kent promotion campaign
Sussex have signed South African seamer Keith Dudgeon from Kent on a two-year contract, adding a bowler who helped his former county secure promotion in 2026. The move was confirmed by Sussex and reported by BBC Sport on 2 October. Dudgeon, 30, becomes Sussex's second signing ahead of the 2027 season, following fellow Kent player Joey Evison.
The right-arm bowler finished Kent's latest County Championship campaign with 42 wickets from 13 appearances, averaging 32.09 and recording best figures of 6-21. Only Matt Milnes took more Championship wickets for the county during the season. Those returns contributed to Kent's promotion from Division Two, with Dudgeon now moving to a Sussex side competing in Division One.
His two seasons at Kent included an early interruption through injury. According to Sussex's announcement, Dudgeon took 7-36 against Northamptonshire on his county debut in the opening match of the previous season before a knee injury sustained in training cut short that spell. He returned this year to play regularly and finish as one of Kent's leading wicket-takers.
Sussex director of cricket Paul Farbrace said the club had been looking for a player with Dudgeon's qualities to strengthen its Championship challenge and help it pursue a place in the Blast knockout stages. Farbrace highlighted the seamer's experience, skill and competitive approach in explaining the recruitment. Sussex put Dudgeon's career first-class record at 281 wickets, taken at an average of 26.96, after extensive experience in South African cricket.
Dudgeon said a long-term place in county cricket had been an ambition for some time and welcomed Sussex's backing. He said he had heard positive things about the dressing room and wanted to contribute both through his performances and his approach around the squad. He also thanked Farbrace, Matt Walker and the captains for their part in arranging the move.
The bowler paid tribute to Kent for the experiences and relationships built over his two seasons there, while describing the Sussex move as a new challenge. His arrival alongside Evison gives Sussex two recruits from the same neighbouring county as preparations for 2027 continue. Both additions have been confirmed by the club.
