Sussex Bring Joey Evison in Early on Loan From Kent

Sussex have brought all-rounder Joey Evison to Hove ahead of schedule on a loan from Kent for the remainder of the 2026 season. Kent Cricket confirmed the agreement on Wednesday, and BBC Sport also reported the move. Evison will then complete his previously arranged permanent transfer to Sussex on October 1.

The 24-year-old had already agreed a three-year Sussex contract after deciding to end his four-year spell with Kent. The new loan means he can join Sussex before that permanent deal begins, adding another option for the closing stretch of the domestic campaign rather than waiting until the season is over.

Kent director of cricket Simon Cook said the arrangement was reached with most of the county’s first-team squad available for the run-in. He explained that moving Evison to Sussex now would provide the all-rounder with first-team opportunities, and Kent wished him well at Hove.

Evison originally joined Kent on loan from Nottinghamshire during the 2022 One-Day Cup before making that transfer permanent ahead of the 2023 season. He was part of the Kent side that won the 2022 competition and produced a player-of-the-match performance in the final at Trent Bridge.

Sussex’s announcement of the permanent signing in July listed Evison with 2,561 runs and 92 wickets from 57 first-class matches. His highest score was an unbeaten 109 and his best bowling return was 5-21. The club also confirmed that he will be available across first-class, one-day and Twenty20 cricket.

Evison said when the permanent agreement was announced that he was looking forward to the opportunity at Sussex and to working with Matt Walker again. The loan now advances the practical start of that switch, while the formal permanent transfer date remains October 1. Kent’s statement did not announce any additional terms of the temporary agreement.
