Haines and Price seal Sussex win and top-three finish at Hampshire

Sussex ended their County Championship campaign with a 197-run victory over relegated Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl, securing a top-three finish in Division One. Captain Tom Haines made 130 before Tom Price returned 5-33 to complete the win on the third day, according to the ECB Reporters' Network match report published by BBC Sport.

The visitors collected 19 points from their seventh victory in 14 Championship matches, while bottom-placed Hampshire took three. Sussex's position was secured despite a 12-point deduction at the start of the season. They had established control with a first-innings total of 244, which included 78 from Jack Leaning, before Jaydev Unadkat's 5-32 helped dismiss Hampshire for 128.

Haines resumed on 99 and reached his century from the first ball of the morning, his first Championship hundred since April 2025. Sussex began the day with a lead of 332 and added 103 runs in just over an hour before declaring at 319-9. Haines was eventually lbw to Felix Organ for 130, while Jack Carson accelerated the innings with 28 from 16 balls, including four sixes.

The declaration left Hampshire needing 436, but their chase quickly unravelled. Unadkat dismissed Organ with his third delivery after Nick Gubbins had been dropped at second slip from the previous ball. Price then removed Toby Albert, Tom Prest and Joe Weatherley, with Prest and Weatherley both departing without scoring. Hampshire were 3-4 and reached lunch at 26-4 before Ben Brown's dismissal left them 29-5.

Gubbins provided resistance with 51 and shared an 85-run sixth-wicket partnership with 18-year-old Ben Mayes. Carson ended that recovery by dismissing both batters in quick succession. Andrew Neal and James Fuller then carried Hampshire to 192-7 at tea, extending the match into the final session after the early collapse had left their innings in trouble.

Fuller made 39 before a catch by Tom Clark ended his innings, while Neal reached his first Championship half-century. Price finished the contest by trapping Neal and Kyle Abbott lbw, completing his fifth career five-wicket haul as Hampshire were bowled out for 238. Their lower-order resistance could not prevent Sussex closing the season with a victory inside three days.
