Sussex Beat Essex by 47 Runs to Ease Division One Relegation Pressure

Sussex completed a 47-run victory over Essex at Chelmsford to move away from the County Championship Division One relegation fight. According to the ECB Reporters' Network match report published by BBC Sport, Sussex needed 21 overs and one hour and 20 minutes on the fourth morning to take the final three wickets, dismissing Essex for 271 in pursuit of 329.

The visitors earned 20 points from the match, while Essex collected three. Sussex had made 275 in their first innings before bowling Essex out for 177, then added 230 second time around. The resulting target proved beyond the home side despite a determined innings from all-rounder Matt Critchley.

Essex began the last day needing another 132 runs with three wickets remaining. Critchley and Mitch Killeen initially focused on extending the contest, adding 31 for the eighth wicket across 11 overs. Ari Karvelas ended Killeen's 34-ball resistance when a rising delivery took the edge through to the wicketkeeper.

Shane Snater then accelerated, scoring 35 from 45 balls and sharing a 48-run ninth-wicket partnership with Critchley. Snater hit two sixes, but Henry Crocombe removed him with the third ball of a new spell, a chance taken at second slip. James Coles later dismissed Critchley for 96 from 132 deliveries, ending an innings that included two sixes and eight fours. It was the third time Critchley had fallen in the nineties during the Championship season.

The decisive passage had come on the second evening. Essex collapsed from 171-3 to 177 all out in 26 balls, with Crocombe taking his second hat-trick in a week. That left Sussex with a 98-run first-innings advantage. Coles then made 79 in Sussex's second innings before completing figures of 4-98 as Essex's chase ended.

Sussex and Essex had entered the fixture separated by only one point, but the result sent Sussex into mid-table and eased their immediate concerns about staying in the top division. Essex remain under pressure near the relegation places. Both counties have three Championship matches left to improve their positions.
