Surridge double earns Nashville late draw at Inter Miami

Sam Surridge scored twice, including a stoppage-time equalizer, as Nashville SC drew 2-2 at Inter Miami on Saturday. Nashville's official match report confirmed that the result at Nu Stadium preserved a nine-point advantage over Miami in the Eastern Conference. The visitors finished the night on 54 points and remained top of MLS.

Nashville struck first through Surridge in the fourth minute, with Andy Najar and Jeisson Palacios credited with assists. Miami drew level in the 19th minute through a Reed Baker-Whiting own goal, according to the club's scoring summary. The teams were still level before Lionel Messi put the hosts ahead in the second half.

Messi's goal arrived in the 62nd minute after he received a pass from Rodrigo De Paul outside the penalty area. The Guardian reported that his left-footed effort beat Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake for his league-leading 19th goal of the season. It was also Messi's 99th goal in all competitions for Miami, taking him within one of a club century.

Surridge denied Miami victory in the first minute of added time. Dayne St Clair saved a shot from Shak Mohammed, but the Nashville forward converted the rebound to complete his brace, The Guardian reported. That brought the visitors level again after they had seen their early advantage disappear and spent the closing stages chasing the game.

There was still time for Miami to threaten a winner. De Paul struck the left post in the fourth minute of stoppage time with what The Guardian described as the match's final kick. Miami instead recorded a third consecutive league draw, leaving them with just one victory from their past eight MLS matches.

Nashville said Surridge's brace was his fifth multi-goal league performance of 2026 and took his MLS total to 15. The club also remained unbeaten in four meetings with Miami across all competitions this year. After three consecutive away games, Nashville will play three of their next four at home, starting against Chicago Fire on September 19.
