Surrey beat Somerset by one wicket to reach One-Day Cup semi-final

Surrey secured the last place in the Women’s One-Day Cup knockout stages with a one-wicket victory over Somerset at The Oval, completing their chase with three balls remaining. According to BBC Sport’s match report, the hosts needed seven from the final over after Somerset posted 295-7. The result sends Surrey into an away semi-final against Hampshire on Wednesday, with The Blaze awaiting the winner in Saturday’s final at Utilita Bowl.

The match brought together the teams sitting third and fourth, while The Blaze and Hampshire had already completed their group fixtures and secured the top two positions. Surrey began the day one point ahead of Somerset, meaning that bringing the scores level would have been enough to progress. They ultimately went one better, winning a contest that remained unresolved until the last pair were together.

Somerset’s innings was built around a third-wicket partnership of 196 between captain Sophie Luff and Niamh Holland after Surrey chose to field. Luff made 108, while Holland finished unbeaten on 130. Holland reached her hundred from 113 deliveries, then scored another 30 from just 15 balls to lift the visitors’ total and leave Surrey with a demanding chase.

Sune Luus contributed 54 in reply, but her dismissal left Surrey at 142-5. Captain Kira Chathli’s 51 and Phoebe Franklin’s 46 kept the innings moving towards the target without removing Somerset’s chances. When Franklin was dismissed in the 45th over, Surrey were 257-8, leaving the lower order to complete the pursuit with only two wickets available.

Kalea Moore added 23 from number nine before being dismissed lbw in the penultimate over, one delivery after calling for a runner. Alex Griffiths returned figures of 5-54 for Somerset. With nine wickets down and seven still required, Surrey’s hopes rested on Kate Coppack and last batter Dani Gregory as Ellie Anderson began the final over.

Anderson opened with a wide, then Coppack’s shot from a low full toss escaped a misfield at mid-off and reached the boundary. A leg-bye brought the scores level and secured Surrey’s qualification; another scrambled leg-bye completed the win. Coppack finished unbeaten on 16, helping Surrey advance despite the two centuries that had put Somerset in a strong position earlier in the day.
