Surrey Sign Nathan Sowter on Multi-Year White-Ball Deal

Surrey have signed leg-spinner Nathan Sowter from Durham on a multi-year contract that will begin with the 2027 season. The deal is limited to white-ball cricket, adding an established short-format bowler to Surrey’s squad for the Vitality Blast.

The move was announced by Surrey on Monday and reported by BBC Sport. Sowter will leave Durham after five seasons in the north-east, having initially joined the county on loan from Middlesex during the 2022 campaign before completing a permanent move.

Surrey said the Australian-born 33-year-old has taken 196 wickets in 195 Twenty20 matches and 76 catches in the format. His domestic record includes a Durham club mark of 24 wickets in the 2023 Blast, while he followed that campaign with 19 wickets in 2024 as the county reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2018.

The signing also brings Sowter back to familiar surroundings in south London. He played at the Oval for five editions of The Hundred and was part of three successive title-winning Oval Invincibles teams from 2023 to 2025. Surrey identified his player-of-the-match contribution in the 2025 final as a highlight of that run. He was subsequently retained by MI London for the 2026 competition.

Sowter began his professional career with Middlesex in 2015 after playing club cricket for Normandy in Surrey. His white-ball performances have also led to opportunities overseas in the Caribbean Premier League and the International League T20. Earlier in 2026, he received his first England Lions call-up for a series against Pakistan Shaheens in the United Arab Emirates.

In Surrey’s announcement, Sowter said the move made sense for him and his family and that he was looking forward to making the Oval his permanent home after his experience there in The Hundred. Alec Stewart said the bowler’s record at the ground would strengthen Surrey for the Blast. The club did not disclose the precise length or financial terms of the agreement beyond describing it as multi-year.
