Surrey Sign Mahipal Lomror for County Championship Run-In
Surrey have signed Indian batter Mahipal Lomror for the final six matches of their 2026 County Championship campaign, BBC Sport reported. The 26-year-old is available for the closing stretch of the Division One season and could make his debut when Surrey host Nottinghamshire in a match beginning Thursday.
Watch the highlights:
Lomror captains Rajasthan in India's domestic Ranji Trophy competition. His first-class batting average stands at 42.62, while his highest score is an unbeaten 300. He also offers Surrey a second discipline with his left-arm spin, having collected 62 wickets in first-class cricket.
In comments published on Surrey's website and reported by the BBC, Lomror described the County Championship move as a major opportunity to test himself in a different environment. He also said he wanted to learn from Surrey's experienced group. The club has not announced an arrangement beyond the six remaining Championship fixtures.
Surrey have added a batter who can bowl spin at a point when two established players are unavailable or facing uncertainty. Will Jacks has an ankle injury, while Dan Lawrence is part of England's Test squad for the series against Pakistan, which starts Wednesday. The BBC report did not give a timetable for Jacks' return.
The defending details of Surrey's run-in show the scale of Lomror's immediate assignment. Surrey sit seventh in Division One with six games left. Their home schedule includes Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Glamorgan, while their remaining away matches take them to Essex, Sussex and Somerset.
The signing therefore gives Surrey another experienced first-class option across every remaining venue on their schedule. Lomror's record confirms both significant batting output and a useful spin-bowling contribution, but his exact role in the side will depend on selection. His earliest stated opportunity to play comes against Nottinghamshire on Thursday, with Surrey seeking to improve their position during the Championship's final phase.
