Surrey pace attack leaves Yorkshire seven down at Oval

Surrey's pace attack put the hosts in control against Yorkshire at the Kia Oval, reducing the visitors to 133-7 on a rain-shortened opening day in County Championship Division One. Bad light ended play with 12.1 overs of the rescheduled 72 still unused, leaving Surrey yet to begin their first innings.

BBC Sport, in a match report from the ECB Reporters' Network, said Surrey won the toss and chose to bowl on a well-grassed surface under grey skies. Morning rain delayed the start until 13:10 BST, but the home side needed only 15 deliveries to claim its first bowling bonus point as Yorkshire's top three fell for a combined one run.

Matt Fisher triggered the collapse by dismissing Adam Lyth leg before for one with his third ball. Two deliveries later, Sam Whiteman was also given lbw when Fisher swung a fuller ball into his pads. Dan Worrall then removed Will Luxton for a four-ball duck, finding the outside edge for wicketkeeper Ben Foakes to take a sharp catch to his right.

From 1-3, James Wharton and Matt Revis produced Yorkshire's only sustained recovery. The pair added 91 in 37 overs, with Wharton scoring 45 and Revis making 40, as they negotiated repeated movement from Surrey's bowlers. Yorkshire reached tea at 86-3 before Surrey broke the stand and quickly regained command.

Tom Lawes had Revis caught at midwicket, and Worrall removed Jonny Bairstow for three in the following over when an outside edge carried to Ollie Pope at second slip. Lawes then ended Wharton's three-hour innings with another catch for Pope. Worrall added the wicket of George Hill, caught behind, as Yorkshire slipped from 92-3 to 113-7.

Worrall finished the day with 3-24 from 17 overs, while Lawes took 2-22 from 13 and Fisher returned 2-42. Dom Bess remained unbeaten on 21 from 49 balls when poor light intervened. Surrey collected two points from the day and Yorkshire none in a fixture involving teams that began the match seventh and eighth in a tightly packed Division One table.
