Surrey ease relegation pressure with draw against Sussex at Hove

Surrey gained breathing room in the County Championship relegation fight after their Division One match against Sussex ended in a draw at Hove. Sussex took 14 points and Surrey 13 from the rain-affected contest, according to the ECB Reporters’ Network report published by BBC Sport. Surrey moved further clear of second-bottom Leicestershire, although their top-flight place is not yet secure.

The opening day had been washed out, leaving the teams with less time to force a result. Sussex made 393 in their first innings and dismissed Surrey for 321 before finishing on 167-3 declared in their second innings. The sides agreed to end proceedings at 16:20 BST, with no final-innings chase taking place. By then, Surrey’s Ollie Pope had delivered just the second over of his first-class bowling career.

Surrey’s remaining three first-innings wickets produced 27 runs on the final day. Adam Thomas and Matt Fisher took their eighth-wicket partnership to 47 before Thomas was caught at extra cover off James Coles. Fisher was later caught at mid-on while attempting to attack Jaydev Unadkat. Mahipal Lomror contributed 58 for Surrey, while Hunt returned figures of 3-65 for Sussex.

Fisher then removed George Thomas lbw early in Sussex’s second innings, but the hosts avoided a collapse. Captain Tom Haines and Charlie Tear added 90 for the second wicket before Lomror trapped Tear lbw. Haines reached 63, his fifth half-century of the season, before falling to Rahul Chahar, with Rory Burns taking the catch at mid-wicket. None of Haines’s five fifties this season has become a century.

Chahar and Lomror bowled 42 overs between them on a surface offering only slow turn. After Haines’s dismissal, Oli Carter and Coles shared an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 36 to carry Sussex through to the agreement to draw. The sustained spin spell did not produce enough wickets to give Surrey a route back into the match.

Sussex remained fourth, having started the season with a 12-point deduction for financial irregularities. Their next Championship fixture brings Nottinghamshire to Hove in the penultimate round. For Surrey, the points increased their cushion over Leicestershire, who also face a possible deduction over a pitch prepared for last month’s match against Glamorgan. That sanction remains uncertain, and Surrey still need further points to remove the threat of relegation.
