Sunderland beat Crystal Palace to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon

Sunderland have signed Belgium forward Malick Fofana from Lyon after overcoming competition from Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day. BBC Sport reported that the completed deal is worth £30m and that the 21-year-old has agreed a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light. Fofana becomes Sunderland's fifth signing of the summer.

Fofana began his senior career with KAA Gent before moving to Lyon in 2024. He scored two goals and supplied one assist during an injury-affected 2025-26 season, according to BBC Sport. The Guardian reported that he had scored 11 times in 59 appearances for Lyon overall and had won five senior caps for Belgium by the time of the transfer.

The move followed a deadline-day contest between Sunderland and Crystal Palace. The Guardian reported that Palace manager Pierre Sage, who previously coached Fofana at Lyon, spoke to the player as Palace tried to secure his signature. Its account said Lyon agreed improved terms with both clubs while Fofana underwent a medical in France commissioned jointly by the two prospective buyers as time ran short.

Published accounts differ slightly on the final valuation. BBC Sport described the transfer as a £30m deal. The Guardian reported an initial £26m fee with add-ons that could take the total to £31m, which would put Fofana above the £30m Sunderland paid Strasbourg for Habib Diarra the previous summer. Sunderland submitted a deal sheet to complete the transfer after the deadline.

Fofana joined defender Kevin Danso in arriving at Sunderland on deadline day. BBC Sport also listed defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie and midfielder Jules Ahoka among the club's other summer additions. Sunderland finished seventh in their first season back in the Premier League and are preparing for their first European campaign since 1973.

Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi said the club believes Fofana has the qualities to succeed in the Premier League and the potential to develop further. He identified the left side as Fofana's main position and said the forward would add to the versatility of Sunderland's wide options. The club completed the move after beating Fulham on Sunday, following an opening-day defeat at Ipswich in the 2026-27 season.
