Sunderland halt losing run as Trafford and Roefs secure goalless draw
Sunderland ended a run of four Premier League defeats with a goalless draw against Leeds United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. Goalkeepers James Trafford and Robin Roefs made key saves in a match disrupted by strong winds, leaving Sunderland bottom of the table and Leeds with their fifth league draw of the season, according to the Guardian's match report.
Watch the highlights:
Brian Brobbey returned from a hamstring injury and gave Sunderland two opportunities before half-time. Trafford saved his deflected effort from an Enzo Le Fée cross, then stopped him again after the striker forced Jaka Bijol into a short back-pass. At the other end, Luke O'Nien made an important tackle on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had passed a late fitness test on a bruised foot.
Sunderland were forced into a defensive change early in the second half when O'Nien accidentally caught teammate Nordi Mukiele in the throat with his elbow during an attempted clearance. Mukiele received lengthy treatment and was replaced by Omar Alderete. Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris subsequently said Mukiele had fully recovered, the Guardian reported.
Leeds threatened after the restart, with Alderete and Le Fée making interceptions to halt Jayden Bogle and Ao Tanaka. Sunderland then created further openings through Nilson Angulo, whose two shots brought saves from Trafford. Both managers changed their attacking options: Timur Tutyerov replaced Brobbey, while Leeds introduced Noah Okafor and Anton Stach for Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson.
Neither side could find a winner in a closing spell that tested both goalkeepers. Trafford kept out a Granit Xhaka corner that threatened to curl in, while Roefs recovered after spilling Tanaka's shot to intervene at Calvert-Lewin's feet. Referee Stuart Attwell rejected the striker's penalty appeal, a decision upheld by a video review. Roefs also made a one-handed save from substitute Sean Longstaff, who later had another effort cleared off the line.
Le Bris regarded the point as a positive response despite Sunderland remaining on one league win for the season. Their next assignment is a visit to Coventry on Saturday. Leeds manager Daniel Farke accepted the draw and welcomed the clean sheet, with Trafford having conceded six league goals in eight games. The result gave Sunderland an end to their losing sequence, but not the second victory they had been seeking.
