Sunderland halt losing run as goalkeepers secure Leeds stalemate
Sunderland ended a four-match Premier League losing streak but remained bottom after drawing 0-0 with Leeds United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday. According to beIN Sports' match report, strong winds associated with Storm Boelo disrupted the contest, with neither team finding a breakthrough despite opportunities for both sides. The point stopped Sunderland's sequence of defeats without delivering a home victory.
Watch the highlights:
James Trafford was central to Leeds keeping the hosts out. The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that Brian Brobbey tested him early after receiving a pass from Enzo Le Fee, then had another opening when Leeds lost control of possession in their own half. Trafford came out to block the striker's attempt with his legs, preventing Sunderland from turning that defensive mistake into a lead.
Leeds had changed their starting side, with Jaka Bijol coming in for Nico Elvedi, who was absent through illness, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post. Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson also started, while Noah Okafor and Anton Stach were among the substitutes. All three of Okafor, Stach and Dominic Calvert-Lewin made the matchday squad after being injury doubts, with Calvert-Lewin selected from the outset.
Sunderland continued to threaten after the interval through Nilson Angulo, whose efforts brought further saves from Trafford. At the other end, beIN Sports reported that Leeds did not manage a shot on target until the 56th minute, when Tarik Muharemovic headed Wilson's corner towards Robin Roefs. Ao Tanaka subsequently tested the Sunderland goalkeeper with a shot after turning near the edge of the penalty area.
Sean Longstaff supplied a late threat for the visitors after coming off the bench. Roefs kept out his effort from distance, while another goal-bound attempt struck Leeds team-mate Lukas Nmecha in added time, according to beIN Sports. Leeds therefore left with their ninth away league draw of 2026, their highest total in a calendar year since 1995.
The match statistics underlined how little separated the teams. Sofascore recorded Sunderland with 51% possession and 15 shots against Leeds' 11, while both sides had four attempts on target. The hosts also finished ahead on expected goals, 0.91 to 0.57, but neither side converted its chances into the goal needed to claim all three points.
