Sunderland close gap on Championship top two with dominant home victory
Sunderland have reignited their Championship title push with a commanding 3-1 victory at the Stadium of Light, closing the gap on the league's top two to just two points with five games remaining. The Black Cats were dominant from the first whistle, taking the lead through a spectacular long-range effort from Jobe Bellingham in the 18th minute. The second half saw Sunderland double their advantage when a well-worked corner routine resulted in a headed goal from captain Dan Ballard. The visitors pulled one back midway through the second half, but Sunderland restored their two-goal cushion late on with a clinical finish from in-form striker Nazariy Rusyn. Manager Mowbray praised his side's response after last weekend's disappointment: "The lads responded perfectly. We spoke about the importance of consistency at this stage of the season, and we showed that today." Sunderland's run-in includes matches against several teams in the lower half of the table, while their main rivals for automatic promotion still face tough fixtures against playoff-chasing sides. "We've put ourselves in a great position. The fans have been incredible this season, and we're determined to give them something to celebrate," Ballard added. Sunderland's recent home form has been particularly impressive, with the Stadium of Light becoming a fortress that opponents struggle to navigate.
