Stone takes nine wickets as Nottinghamshire beat Hampshire to stay four points off top

Nottinghamshire defeated Hampshire by 54 runs at Trent Bridge to remain four points behind County Championship leaders Somerset with two rounds remaining. Olly Stone took six second-innings wickets as the defending champions completed victory on the final day, according to the ECB Reporters' Network report published by BBC Sport. The result also left Nottinghamshire one point ahead of Warwickshire in the Division One title race.

Hampshire began the day needing another 117 runs with four wickets available, but their progress was checked after they had added only seven. Stone removed Ben Mayes for 25, with wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay taking a one-handed catch, then dismissed Eddie Jack second ball in a double-wicket maiden. Kyle Abbott soon followed, trapped lbw by a Stone yorker, leaving Hampshire's last pair to resist.

Scott Currie and debutant Manny Lumsden prolonged the contest for 20 overs before substitute fielder Ben Martindale caught Lumsden at point for 21. Currie remained unbeaten on 44 as Hampshire were dismissed for 123, with the match ending seven minutes into a delayed lunch. Stone returned 6-28 in the innings and 9-95 overall; Dillon Pennington contributed second-innings figures of 3-33.

The win followed a match in which both sides struggled in their second innings. Nottinghamshire made 377 first time around, led by Joe Clarke's 105 and Liam Patterson-White's 92, before Hampshire replied with 304, including an unbeaten 133 from Jake Lehmann. Lumsden then took 5-36 as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 104, but Hampshire could not turn that bowling performance into victory.

Nottinghamshire collected 22 points and Hampshire four. Stone's recent form has been central to the champions' challenge: the report puts his return over the past four matches at 25 wickets at an average of 12.48. Their remaining fixtures are away to Sussex at Hove and at home to Yorkshire, with the final match starting on 24 September.

For Hampshire, the defeat left a 32-point gap to eighth-placed Essex and a difficult task to avoid relegation. Their final two games are away to Leicestershire and at home to Sussex. Having survived by a single point on the final day last season, they again enter the closing rounds with their Division One place under threat.
