Stoke earn fifth straight away win with comeback at Portsmouth
Stoke came from behind to beat Portsmouth 2-1 on Saturday, securing a fifth consecutive away victory in the Championship. Jack McGlynn and Ben Wilmot supplied the goals after Tyrese Shade had given the hosts an early lead. According to the Guardian’s match roundup, the result temporarily lifted Stoke above Middlesbrough at the top before the later fixtures.
Watch the highlights:
Shade opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a curling effort, leaving Stoke to recover from a disappointing first half. The visitors did so after the interval: McGlynn scored when Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid failed to gather a cross, and Wilmot headed in a rebound to complete the turnaround. Those two goals extended Stoke’s run of success on the road.
Manager Mark Robins said it was the first time Stoke had won five consecutive away matches since 1947, the Guardian reported. He praised his players’ response after the break and said they could take satisfaction from their performance heading into the international break. Robins also acknowledged that Stoke had fallen below their usual standard in the opening half before producing the comeback.
Elsewhere, Norwich recorded a 5-0 victory at Bristol City, taking their tally to nine goals across successive away wins. Paris Maghoma broke the deadlock after 22 minutes, carrying the ball forward before finishing low. Harry Darling doubled the lead in the 53rd minute after Jason Knight’s misplaced header, and Maghoma then set up Andre Brooks for Norwich’s third three minutes later.
Substitute Jovon Makama added a fourth from Anthony Musaba’s cross with 20 minutes remaining. Mathias Kvistgaarden completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 80th minute after Lisav Eissat pulled him down. Bristol City’s defeat was their fifth at home in the league this season, while Norwich manager Philippe Clement praised his side’s development, discipline and contributions from across the team.
Wrexham and Wolves shared a 1-1 draw at Cae Ras. Adam Armstrong put Wolves ahead after 25 minutes, but Lewis O’Brien replied two minutes later with his first goal of the season. The draw extended Wolves’ unbeaten sequence to six matches without delivering their first win at the ground. Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney attended the clubs’ first league meeting since 1988.
