Starc Takes Six as Australia Build 101-Run Lead Over Bangladesh
Mitchell Starc took 6-12 as Bangladesh were dismissed for 64 on a dramatic opening day of the second Test in Mackay. Australia then reached 165-8, with Cameron Green unbeaten on 51 and the hosts 101 runs ahead.

Australia finished a wicket-filled opening day of the second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay with a 101-run lead, despite another uneven display from their batting order. BBC Sport reported that the hosts closed on 165-8 after dismissing Bangladesh for 64, with 18 wickets falling across the day. Cameron Green was unbeaten on 51 alongside Nathan Lyon, who had made 10.

Watch the highlights:

Mitchell Starc set the tone immediately by having Shadman Islam caught behind from the first delivery of the match. The left-arm fast bowler had five wickets within his first 22 balls as Bangladesh collapsed to 12-5. Captain Pat Cummins supported him with 3-25, while Bangladesh were eventually bowled out in 34 overs. Their total was the fourth-lowest in the country's Test history.

Bangladesh briefly resisted after slipping to 39-9, adding 25 for the final wicket before the innings ended. Shoriful Islam was their top scorer with 14. Starc completed figures of 6-12 and moved past South Africa's Dale Steyn into 10th place on the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, reaching 441 wickets.

Australia's reply did not provide the straightforward recovery the home side might have expected. Recalled opener Matt Renshaw was caught at first slip for eight, Travis Head was bowled after chopping on for 22, and Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed for four. Labuschagne's wait for another Test century has now extended to 43 innings.

Steve Smith and Green steadied Australia with a 77-run partnership before Smith was given out lbw for 42. His dismissal began another slide, with four wickets falling for 30 runs. Alex Carey made five and Beau Webster was out first ball, but Green remained at the crease after following his second-innings century in the first Test in Darwin with another important contribution.

Shoriful led Bangladesh's response with the ball, taking 6-35 to prevent Australia from turning their advantage into a commanding first-day total. The match followed Bangladesh's surprise victory in the opening Test, and the second day will begin with Australia still two wickets from being dismissed but already holding a three-figure lead.
