Stan Moody Stuns John Higgins to Reach British Open Quarter-Finals
Stan Moody produced a late surge to defeat four-time champion John Higgins 4-2 and reach the British Open quarter-finals for a second consecutive year. The 19-year-old English player secured the last-16 victory in Cheltenham after Higgins repeatedly pulled level during the opening stages, according to BBC Sport's match report.
Watch the highlights:
Moody took the first frame and later moved 2-1 in front, but Higgins responded on both occasions to make the contest level. The decisive shift came with the score at 2-2. Moody compiled a break of 46 to regain the lead, putting himself one frame away from a place in the last eight.
The sixth frame delivered the match's defining turnaround. Higgins, the 51-year-old Scottish veteran, established a 61-0 advantage and appeared positioned to force a deciding frame. Moody instead completed a clearance of 69, finishing on the black to close out the match. The sequence gave the teenager the two frames he needed for the 4-2 result.
Moody, who was born in Halifax, will face fellow Englishman Liam Highfield in the quarter-finals. Highfield booked his place with a 4-1 victory over China's Long Zehuang. Moody's progression matches his run to the British Open quarter-finals a year earlier, giving him another opportunity in the closing stages of the tournament.
Elsewhere in the last 16, Judd Trump advanced without dropping a frame against David Gilbert. Trump won 4-0 and made century breaks of 118 and 105 in the final two frames. Jack Lisowski, playing in his home town of Cheltenham, beat Lyu Haotian 4-1 and will next meet Mark Selby.
Selby, a four-time world champion, reached the quarter-finals with a 4-2 win over Ukraine's Iulian Boiko. Wales' Jak Jones also recorded a 4-2 victory, defeating Latvia's Artemus Zizins. Northern Ireland's Aaron Hill completed a 4-0 win over Fan Zhengyi, while Highfield's victory finalized Moody's next opponent. BBC Sport reported the results as the quarter-final field took shape.
