St Helens Level Super League Summit with Wakefield Victory, Setting Up Blockbuster Leeds Clash
St Helens moved level on points with Leeds Rhinos at the summit of the Betfred Super League after a commanding 34-14 victory over Wakefield Trinity at the Be Well Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The champions showed why they remain the team to beat in Super League, producing a stunning second-half display that saw them score 24 unanswered points after trailing 14-10 at the break. Tommy Makinson and Jon Wilkin led the charge with two tries each, while halfback Jonny Lomax orchestrated the attacking play with a try and three conversions.
"We knew Wakefield would come at us hard in the first half," said St Helens coach Paul Wellens. "They've been in good form and made us work for everything. But the way we responded in the second half showed the character of this group. The scoreline doesn't reflect how hard they made us work."
The victory sets up a blockbuster confrontation with Leeds Rhinos at the Totally Wicked Stadium next Friday. Both teams sit level on 32 points from 14 matches, with Leeds holding the superior points difference. The match could prove decisive in determining who finishes the regular season top of the pile.
Wakefield's tries came through Mason Lino and Tom Johnstone, with Lino adding both conversions. Despite the defeat, Trinity showed encouraging signs and will take confidence from pushing the defending champions so closely for 50 minutes.
