Sri Lanka chase 430 to stun England despite Brook's record 202
Sri Lanka chased down a target of 430 to beat England by two wickets in Rawalpindi, leaving Harry Brook's record-breaking 202 in a losing cause. According to BBC Sport's match report, Sri Lanka reached 430-8 with one ball remaining after England posted 429-4 in the one-day international tri-series. It was the second-highest successful chase in ODI history.
Watch the highlights:
Pavan Rathnayake led the reply with 130, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka each scored 97. Sri Lanka had slipped to 24-2 after choosing to bowl first, but those contributions kept the target within reach. They still required 109 runs from the final 10 overs and maintained the chase despite losing both Rathnayake and Shanaka before the finish.
The contest came down to eight runs from Josh Tongue's final over. Tongue bowled Dinuth Wellalage and Eshan Malinga with consecutive deliveries, giving England a late opportunity to defend their total. Janith Liyanage then settled the match: with six needed from two balls, he struck the penultimate delivery for six down the ground to complete Sri Lanka's victory.
Earlier, Brook became the first England batter to score a double century in an ODI, surpassing Ben Stokes' national record of 182. He reached 200 from 114 balls, which BBC Sport reported was the fastest ODI double hundred. His 116-ball innings contained 21 fours and 10 sixes, and ended when he was caught at third man from the last ball of England's innings.
Brook's acceleration transformed England's total. He had made just 13 from his first 24 deliveries before reaching fifty in 42 balls and his fourth ODI century in 75. The next hundred took only 39 balls. England scored 156 in their final 10 overs, with Joe Root contributing 69 and Will Jacks finishing unbeaten on 66 alongside Brook's dominant contribution.
England could not translate that batting performance into a win. Jofra Archer was rested for the tri-series, while Adil Rashid was omitted for tactical reasons. Sam Curran conceded 103 runs in nine overs, taking two wickets, and BBC Sport reported that dew affected England's ability to grip the ball. The defeat left England without a victory after two matches, with Pakistan next in Lahore on Sunday.
