SPFL club distributions hit record £49.6 million as £50 million target nears
The Scottish Professional Football League has reported record annual distributions of £49.6 million to clubs, an increase of £7.6 million, or 18%. BBC Sport reported the figures on Thursday, with broadcasting, licensing, match data and sponsorship providing the main sources of income.
The league's own announcement put group income at £58 million. Fees paid to clubs by the SPFL rose separately to £41.2 million, up £6 million, or 17%. The wider distributions figure is now £400,000 short of the £50 million objective set for 2029 following a Deloitte strategic review in 2021.
Additional television revenue helped drive the increase. The SPFL highlighted its Sky Sports and Premier Sports agreements for live Premiership coverage through 2029, alongside an improved Premier Sports Cup broadcasting and sponsorship deal running until at least 2031. Licensing, data and sponsorship also contributed to commercial growth.
The financial results came alongside higher attendances. According to BBC Sport, Scottish Premiership crowds exceeded four million for the first time last season. The broadcaster reported that the competition continued to draw Europe's highest attendances relative to population, adding a measure of spectator support to the league's commercial figures.
BBC Sport also cited UEFA figures showing approximately six million attendances at men's matches in Scotland during the 2025-26 season. The breakdown included 900,000 in the lower leagues, 200,000 at domestic cup matches and 800,000 at European games. Chief executive Neil Doncaster said maintaining the balance between television revenue and the atmosphere generated by supporters remained central to the competition's appeal.
The SPFL clarified that group distributions cover more than league-position payments. They also include parachute payments, distributions to ScottishPower Women's Premier League clubs, cup prize money and facility fees for Premiership matches televised by Premier Sports. Those categories distinguish the £49.6 million total from the separate club-fees figure.
Chairman Murdoch MacLennan said the league believed it could reach £50 million in distributions this season by working with its 42 clubs. That remains an objective: the newly announced accounts record £49.6 million, not a completed £50 million payout.
