Sovereignty wins Breeders’ Cup Classic to give Godolphin its first victory in the race
Sovereignty won the $7m Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, delivering Godolphin its first victory in the race. Ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott, the four-year-old added the Classic to his 2025 Kentucky Derby success, according to the Guardian’s live reporting from the meeting.
Watch the highlights:
The Puma finished second and Knightsbridge took third in the seven-runner field. Japan’s Forever Young, who won the Classic last year, finished fifth and was unable to retain his title. Sovereignty’s victory gave Godolphin another breakthrough in a major American race after the same horse had supplied the operation’s first Kentucky Derby win in 2025.
Knightsbridge, also trained by Mott, established the early lead, with Forever Young close to the pace and Sovereignty initially racing in fifth. Alvarado brought Sovereignty into contention as the field approached the final turn. He then accelerated into the lead in the stretch and pulled clear, while Forever Young could not match the winner’s finish.
The result completed a campaign in which Sovereignty had returned to winning form before arriving at Keeneland. He finished second in a Grade Two race in April and third in the Grade One Stephen Foster Stakes in June. His most recent start before the Classic had brought victory in the Grade One Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, giving him another top-level success ahead of Saturday’s race.
The meeting also finally brought Sovereignty and Forever Young together in the Classic after their anticipated encounter a year earlier failed to materialise. Sovereignty had been withdrawn from the 2025 race at Del Mar because of injury. Forever Young went on to win that edition, having finished third in the 2024 Classic at the same venue.
Saturday’s Classic was the final race on the card and its most valuable contest. Earlier, Benvenuto Cellini had won the $5m Turf under Ryan Moore for Aidan O’Brien, while Deterministic beat defending champion Notable Speech in the Mile. The closing result gave Godolphin a first Classic trophy on a day when defending champions Forever Young and Notable Speech were both beaten.
