Southampton beat West Ham 3-2 to end nine-match unbeaten run
Southampton won 3-2 at West Ham United on Saturday, October 24, ending the hosts' nine-match unbeaten Championship run. Kuryu Matsuki, James Bree and Lewis Dobbin scored before half-time at the London Stadium. According to Southampton's official match report, the victory moved Tonda Eckert's side into sixth place, two points behind West Ham.
Watch the highlights:
Eckert changed four players from the team that had drawn with Bolton, bringing in Caspar Jander, Matsuki, Ryan Manning and Dobbin. Southampton reported that Jander was making his first competitive start since the second leg of their play-off semi-final against Middlesbrough. The changes were followed by an early breakthrough: Matsuki scored in the second minute after Mads Hermansen parried Leo Scienza's shot.
Bree doubled the lead when Hermansen pushed away Jander's cross and the full-back drove the loose ball into the top corner. West Ham responded through former Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters, who scored in the 24th minute after receiving a pass from Divine Mukasa. The hosts had reduced the deficit, but Southampton restored their two-goal advantage before the break.
Dobbin supplied the third goal from close range after West Ham failed to clear a succession of attempts, with their official report describing blocked efforts from James Ward-Prowse, Finn Azaz and Scienza before the finish. Southampton confirmed it was Dobbin's first competitive goal for the club. It gave the visitors a 3-1 half-time lead despite West Ham's recovery from their difficult opening.
Both teams threatened again after the interval. Dobbin struck the outside of a post, while Maximilian Kilman's long-range effort hit the crossbar and rebounded away off Daniel Peretz's back. West Ham's report also credited Jack Stephens with blocking a Taty Castellanos attempt. Peretz later used his feet to deny Arne Engels as the home side continued seeking a route back into the match.
Tomas Soucek finally made it 3-2 in stoppage time with a shot from outside the penalty area, his 50th West Ham goal according to the club. Southampton still needed one more intervention from Peretz, who saved a late goalbound effort following Jarrod Bowen's cross. The visitors held their lead through the final whistle to secure all three points.
