South Africa Hold Off All Blacks to Level Rivalry Series

South Africa defeated New Zealand 33-26 in Cape Town on Saturday, levelling the four-Test series between the sides at 1-1. BBC Sport reported that the world champions built a 24-14 half-time advantage before resisting a late All Blacks comeback, with replacement Cameron Hanekom winning the decisive breakdown turnover during New Zealand's final attack.

The Springboks made an immediate impact when Jesse Kriel crossed after two minutes, and Cheslin Kolbe converted. New Zealand responded through Cam Roigard, but South Africa regained control as Kolbe kicked a penalty and Damian de Allende scored following a powerful maul. Damian McKenzie then finished a New Zealand move to reduce the hosts' advantage to 17-14.

South Africa created a crucial cushion just before the interval. After head coach Rassie Erasmus introduced Malcolm Marx and Ox Nche ahead of a five-metre scrum, the Springboks won successive penalty advantages and captain Siya Kolisi forced his way over. Kolbe's conversion sent the hosts into the break with a 10-point lead.

Kolbe added two second-half penalties to extend South Africa's advantage to 30-14. New Zealand continued to threaten with ball in hand, and Leroy Carter scored in the left corner after another attacking move involving McKenzie. Kolbe later added his fourth penalty, completing an 18-point contribution that BBC Sport said earned him player-of-the-match honours.

The All Blacks produced another late surge. Captain Ardie Savea crossed in the 77th minute and Ruben Love's conversion cut the deficit to seven points. South Africa lock Lood de Jager was also sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle, leaving the hosts to protect their lead under pressure in the closing moments. Hanekom's turnover ended the final New Zealand opportunity.

New Zealand scored four tries to South Africa's three, but the Springboks' set-piece strength and Kolbe's goal-kicking proved decisive. The result prevented the All Blacks from becoming the first New Zealand team since 1996 to win consecutive Tests in South Africa. Two matches remain in the series, with the third Test scheduled for next Saturday in Soweto, Johannesburg.
