Sophie Devine powers Perth Scorchers to six-wicket win over Melbourne Stars
Sophie Devine delivered with bat and ball as Perth Scorchers beat Melbourne Stars by six wickets in the Women's Big Bash League at North Sydney Oval on Sunday. According to BBC Sport's scorecard, Perth reached 137-4 in 15 overs after Melbourne posted 136-6, completing the chase with five overs remaining in the competition's 16th match.
Watch the highlights:
Devine struck 55 from just 24 deliveries, hitting eight fours and three sixes to give Perth's reply its momentum. She was eventually caught by Kim Garth off Sophie Day with the score at 86-2 in the eighth over. Her innings followed the early departure of Katie Mack, who was bowled by Day for two with Perth on 14.
Beth Mooney contributed 28 from 24 balls, including four boundaries, before falling to Garth at 109-4. Freya Kemp had also been dismissed for two, bowled by Annabel Sutherland. Mikayla Friday and Chloe Piparo then finished the chase unbeaten on 24 and 14 respectively. Day took 2-34 from four overs for Melbourne, while Garth and Sutherland claimed one wicket apiece.
Earlier, Melbourne chose to bat and relied on Meg Lanning's 56 from 46 balls to build their total. The captain hit 10 fours before being caught by Piparo off Devine in the 18th over, leaving the Stars at 105-6. Rhys McKenna made 12 and Sutherland added 14, but Amy Jones, Naomi Stalenberg and Dani Gibson were all dismissed for single-figure scores.
Georgia Prestwidge supplied a late contribution of 23 not out from 11 balls, striking two fours and two sixes. Charlie Dean finished unbeaten on 10 from 14 deliveries. Their unbroken seventh-wicket partnership added 31 runs after Lanning's dismissal, carrying Melbourne through the remainder of their 20 overs without another wicket falling.
Devine's bowling return was 2-18 from three overs, with Sutherland her other wicket alongside Lanning. Amy Edgar also took two wickets, removing Jones and Gibson, while Fatima Sana bowled McKenna. Alana King went wicketless but conceded only 12 runs from four overs, the lowest economy rate among Perth's bowlers. Those contributions kept the target within reach before Devine's half-century set up a comfortable finish.
